CSS NEW ORLEANS
In the short four-year history of the Confederate States of America (1861~1865), only one ship bore the name of NEW ORLEANS, the largest city in Louisiana at that time. |

The Confederate NEW ORLEANS (1861 ~ April 07, 1862):
CSS NEW ORLEANS was a floating battery fitted out at New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1861. She featured "two small boilers with pump connections," designed to repel boarders by drenching them with scalding water from her hoses. She deployed under Lieutenant S.W. Averett, CSN, in the Mississippi River in time to assist joint Army-Navy operations at Island No. 10 and New Madrid, Missouri. These operations lasted from March 12 to April 07, 1862. On the final day of this engagement, the Confederates—avoiding capture—sank NEW ORLEANS during the evacuation of Island No. 10. |
