USS LAKE ARTHUR

One ship has had the honor to bear the name of LAKE ARTHUR, a large lake in Calcasieu Parish located approximately 90 miles west of Morgan City.

LAKE ARTHUR (September 17, 1918 ~ April 03, 1919):

USS LAKE ARTHUR, a cargo transport, was launched on February 16, 1918, by the Detroit Shipbuilding Company in Detroit, Michigan.  She was acquired by the U.S. Navy from the United States Shipping Board (USSB) on September 17, 1918, and was commissioned at Brest, France, on that same day with Lieutenant Commander Edwin T. Madden, USNRF, in command.

Assigned to NOTS, the LAKE ARTHUR transported U.S. Army stores from United Kingdom bases to supply ports in France.  She served in this capacity until February 18, 1919, when she cleared Cardiff, Wales, laden with Army cargo.  She arrived in Philadelphia on March 11.  LAKE ARTHUR was decommissioned on April 03 and returned to the USSB on that same day.  In 1928, she was sold to Eastern Steamship Lines, Inc., and operated out of Norfolk, Virginia, under the name VIRGINIA LIMITED.
