EAST RIGOLETS LIGHTHOUSE

 

Location:  Rigolets waterway, Mississippi Sound

Station Established:  1833

Year Tower First Lit:  1833 (?)

Deactivated:  May 25, 1874

Tower Shape:  Conical, masonry tower

Markings/Patterns:  White

Height:  45 ft.

Original Lens:  10 lamps and reflectors (1833)

 

East Rigolets Lighthouse

The East Rigolets Lighthouse survived the Civil War

and was relit on November 21, 1862.

 


FRANKS ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE

 

Location:  Franks Island

Station Established:  1818

Year Tower First Lit:  1823

Deactivated:  1856

Construction Materials:  Brick

Tower Shape:  Conical

 


 

HEAD OF PASSES LIGHTHOUSE

 

Location:  Deer Island, approach to the Mississippi River

Station Established:  1852

Year Tower First Lit:  1852

Deactivated:  1872

Tower Shape:  67-ft. tower (moved to Pass a l'Outre in 1854); light then placed in the dormer window of the dwelling in 1853; a light was placed on a wooden tripod in 1863.

Height:  67 ft.

Original Lens:  6th Order Fresnel

 

Head of Passes Lighthouse

The Head of Passes Lighthouse consisted of a light placed in the 2nd story window of the lighthouse watcher's cottage.

 

 

New Canal Lighthouse

The New Canal Lighthouse on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain is still in use today.

OYSTER BAY (BAYOU) LIGHTHOUSE

 

Location:  Easternmost entrance of Atchafalaya Bay

Station Established:  1903

Year Tower First Lit:  1903

Still Operational:  No

Automated:  Yes (1946)

Foundation Materials:  Pile with Platform

Construction Materials:  Wood

Tower Shape:  Square tower on square dwelling

Markings/Patterns:  White with Dark Roofs & Lantern

 

The Oyster Bay (Bayou) Lighthouse

Established in 1903, the Oyster Bay (Bayou)

Lighthouse aided in the navigation of

Atchafalaya Bay.

 

 

Pass a l'Outre Lighthouse

The Pass a l'Outre Lighthouse inherited its tower

from the Head of Passes Lighthouse.

Location:  Head of Passes, Mississippi River delta

Station Established:  1855

Year Tower First Lit:  1855

Year Deactivated:  1934

Foundation Materials:  Stone / Timber Pile

Construction Materials:  Cast Iron with Brick Lining

Tower Shape:  Conical

Markings/Patterns:  Black & white spirals with dark lantern
