Fall Field Day '99

 


 

Fall Field Day '99: Held October 29-31, 1999. Fifteen (15) participants attending including five (5) former KIDD crew members. Those attending came from eight (8) different states: Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Mississippi, Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan, and Louisiana.

 

Work projects focused in two main areas: restoration of the aft fireroom and restoring movement to the barrel of 5"/38-cal. Gun Mount #53. Mike and Robin McGee, Patrick McGee, Phil Oxley (APA-227), and John Ellsworth (DD-591) spent most of the day Friday and all day on Saturday in the attempt to train Mount #53. Rick

Jones and son Richard arrived on Saturday to lend an extra pair of hands to the effort. Down below, KIDD volunteer Rick Worley (DD-576) had his gang busy with the continued effort of restoring the aft fireroom. George Gordin (DD-661), Richard Ammon, Jr. (DD-661), Edward Wolfford (DD-661), and F.D. Murphree (DD-886) accomplished quite a bit of clean-up and paintwork in this area. Richard Truman (DD-661), Mack Bradley (DD-661), Harry Howard (DD-210 & DD-265), and Tony Brown (U.S. Army Air Corps) spent the weekend tracking down electrical gremlins in Radio Central, Emergency Radio, and the shipboard sound system.

 

Members of Cub Scout Pack 393 from New Orleans, Louisiana came aboard on Saturday night for an Overnight stay and were able to meet with some of the veterans and ask about their experiences.

 

Benjamin C. Fernandez (DDG-16 & FF-1074) and wife Jo Anne returned by popular demand as the galley crew, providing meals for the crew throughout the weekend.
