February 28, 2008—USS KIDD Amateur Radio Club

The USS KIDD Amateur Radio Club (ARC) will be aboard ship monitoring frequencies in the range of 14.250 to 14.320 MHz and 20 meters general band.  Other bands are possible.  CW activity will be near the QRP calling frequencies 7040, 10106, 14060, 21060, and 28060.  The station will be active from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CST/CDT.  Grab your headsets, fire up your radios, get ready to "guard the fox," and collect a new QSL card from the KIDD.  For more information, visit the Baton Rouge ARC website.

A memorial service will be held aboard the USS KIDD (DD-661) to honor the memory of the thirty-eight (38) crewmen killed when a Japanese kamikaze struck the ship off the coast of Okinawa on this date in 1945.  The service begins at 1:55 p.m. and is open to the public.  For more information, contact us at 225-342-1942 or email us at info@usskidd.com.

                              Premier of "The Carrier"

July 04, 2008—Star-Spangled Celebration

Join us for food, fun, and fireworks at the USS KIDD celebrates Independence Day.  The day starts off with food and drink booths opening at 12:00 noon, followed by live music, a mock air attack on the KIDD, and much more!  Then wrap up the night with a spectacular fireworks display over the Mississippi River.

Destroyer Tender Silhouette

September 16-20, 2008—USS HAMUL (AD-20 Reunion

The former shipmates of the Hamul-class destroyer tender USS HAMUL (AD-20) will be visiting Baton Rouge and the USS KIDD from September 16-20, 2008.  During World War II, the HAMUL conducted the initial repairs on the KIDD after she suffered a kamikaze attack off of Okinawa.  The crew of the HAMUL cast a bronze plaque with the names of KIDD's fallen 38 crewmen and presented it to their surviving shipmates.  That plaque remained aboard the KIDD for the remainder of her career and is today preserved in our museum.  For more information on the HAMUL reunion, contact reunion coordinator George Conrad at 760-251-8453 or visit the HAMUL's website.

Freedom Walk

September, 2008—Freedom Run

Originally created in 2005 to commemorate the attack on the Pentagon and honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the Freedom Walk has grown into a nationwide event.  The Freedom Walk will be scheduled on a weekend to allow for the greatest amount of participation.  The starting point for the walk will be at the USS KIDD Veterans Memorial.  The route will start at the USS KIDD Veterans Memorial and will proceed northward along the Riverwalk for ½ mile before returning to the KIDD for a total distance of one (1) mile.

Date and time of the walk will be announced.  Come down to the Riverfront and show your support for our veterans and remember the victims of September 11th.

September 11, 2008—Patriot Day

A memorial service will be held in the Louisiana Memorial Plaza in honor of those Americans killed on this date in 2001 when terrorists hijacked four civilian airlines and used them to attack the Pentagon and destroy the World Trade Center.  The time for the service will be announced and will be open to the public.  For more information, contact us at 225-342-1942.

October 16-19, 2008—Fall Field Day

Veterans of all branches of service and civilians alike are invited to participate in the Fall Field Day aboard the USS KIDD, assisting in the restoration work of this historic vessel.  Participants bunk aboard ship throughout the weekend and enjoy hands-on involvement in various work projects ranging from restoration of the ship's engineering spaces to painting and chipping, polishing brass, and more.  Electrical, plumbing, and carpentry skills are welcome.

First Sundays are FREE admission for the Museum.

December 07, 2008—First Sunday

The USS KIDD museum's exhibition galleries are now open to the public and free of charge on the first Sunday of each month!  Standard admission applies for touring the ship.

 

Other museums in downtown Baton Rouge offering free admission on First Sundays of each month are the Louisiana Art & Science Museum (LASM), the Old State Capitol, and the LSU Museum of Art at the Shaw Center.

 

USS KIDD Ham Radio Event

December 07, 2008—USS KIDD Amateur Radio Club

The USS KIDD Amateur Radio Club (ARC) will be aboard ship monitoring frequencies in the range of 14.250 to 14.320 MHz and 20 meters general band.  Other bands are possible.  CW activity will be near the QRP calling frequencies 7040, 10106, 14060, 21060, and 28060.  The station will be active from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CST/CDT.  Grab your headsets, fire up your radios, get ready to "guard the fox," and collect a new QSL card from the KIDD.  For more information, visit the Baton Rouge ARC website.

December 07, 2008—Pearl Harbor Day

A memorial service will be held aboard the USS KIDD (DD-661) to honor the memory of those servicemen killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on this date in 1941.  Approximately 2,400 Americans were killed on that fateful morning.  Among their number were forty-five sons of Louisiana and RADM Isaac C. Kidd, Sr., after whom the USS KIDD is named.  The service begins at 11:55 a.m. and is open to the public.  For more information, contact us at 225-342-1942.

December 07, 2008—USCGC WHITE ALDER

                                          Memorial Observance

A memorial service will be held at the Louisiana Memorial Plaza for the seventeen (17) crewmen lost aboard the Coast Guard buoy tender USCGC WHITE ALDER (WLM-541).  On this date in 1968, the WHITE ALDER and all but three of her crew were lost in a collision with the Taiwanese freighter M/V HELENA on the Mississippi River near White Castle, Louisiana, just south of Baton Rouge, leaving the tender and most of her crew entombed on the bottom of the river.  The service begins at 2:00 p.m. and is open to the public.  For more information, contact us at 225-342-1942.

December 27, 2008—Living History Weekend
