The USS KIDD Veterans Memorial is proud to host a celebration honoring our Vietnam and Vietnam-era veterans on Saturday, March 31, 2012, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the riverfront in downtown Baton Rouge.  The U.S. Senate adopted a resolution declaring March 30 each year as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day, noting that the men and women of the Armed Forces who returned home from Vietnam did not receive welcoming celebrations as those who served before and after them had.

 

This day-long celebration will include the following:

 

  The USS KIDD Museum galleries will be open to the public at no charge (9:00 a.m. through

          5:00 p.m.).  Regular admission rates apply for Shipboard Tours of the USS KIDD.

 

  50% off Shipboard Tour admission rates for all veterans and their families (must identify yourself

          at the ticket counter).

Join us for food, fun, and fireworks at the USS KIDD celebrates Independence Day.  The day starts off with food and drink booths opening at 12:00 noon, followed by live music, a mock air attack on the KIDD, and much more!  Then wrap up the night with a spectacular fireworks display over the Mississippi River.

Freedom Walk

September 08, 2012Freedom Walk & Patriot Day Observances

Originally created in 2005 to commemorate the attack on the Pentagon and honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the Freedom Walk has grown into a nationwide event.  The starting point for the walk will be at the USS KIDD Veterans Memorial.  The route will start at the USS KIDD Veterans Memorial and will proceed southward along South River Road for ½ mile before returning to the KIDD for a total distance of one (1) mile.

 

A memorial service will be held on the museum grounds to honor those Louisiana natives who were lost in the Pentagon and World Trade Center attacks:  Lt. Michael Scott Lamana (USN), Kevin Wayne Yokum (USN), Louis Calvin Williams III, Leo Russell Keen, and Robert J. Hymel.  The Walk will take place immediately afterward.  Times and details to be announced soon.

Veterans of all branches of service and civilians alike are invited to participate in the Fall Field Day aboard the USS KIDD, assisting in the restoration work of this historic vessel.  Participants bunk aboard ship throughout the weekend and enjoy hands-on involvement in various work projects ranging from restoration of the ship's engineering spaces to painting and chipping, polishing brass, and more.  Electrical, plumbing, and carpentry skills are welcome.

December 07, 2012Pearl Harbor Day

A memorial service will be held aboard the USS KIDD (DD-661) to honor the memory of those servicemen killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on this date in 1941.  Approximately 2,400 Americans were killed on that fateful morning.  Among their number were forty-five sons of Louisiana and RADM Isaac C. Kidd, Sr., after whom the USS KIDD is named.  The service begins at 11:55 a.m. and is open to the public.  All interested parties are invited to attend.  Times and details to be announced soon.  For more information, contact us at 225-342-1942.

                Memorial Observance

A memorial service will be held at the Louisiana Memorial Plaza for the seventeen (17) crewmen lost aboard the Coast Guard buoy tender USCGC WHITE ALDER (WLM-541).  On this date in 1968, the WHITE ALDER and all but three of her crew were lost in a collision with the Taiwanese freighter M/V HELENA on the Mississippi River near White Castle, Louisiana, just south of Baton Rouge, leaving the tender and most of her crew entombed on the bottom of the river.  The service is open to the public and all interested parties are invited to attend.  Times and details to be announced soon.  For more information, contact us at 225-342-1942.
